“Γυναίκα από την Ελλάδα” (Woman From Greece) captures a moment I stumbled into while walking through the streets of Athens. After stopping for lunch, I noticed everyone around me sipping spritzes, limoncellos, and indulging in afternoon cigarettes. Were they on lunch breaks or simply done for the day?
I couldn’t understand the words being spoken, but in a universal language and expression, I caught glimpses of workplace gossip and the dramatic sagas of love and loss. The girl across from me was the only one who stayed quiet. She sat beside a friend, listening instead of speaking. Her glass was empty, but something about her felt completely full.
Oil on canvas.
